About General Braddock
General Braddock’s life is a remarkable narrative of courage and skill that predates the Emancipation Proclamation by nearly seven decades. Born into slavery, he served as a body servant to a British general during the French and Indian War. Later, it is believed he served with George Washington before being enslaved by the Van Meter family in Kentucky.
Braddock’s military expertise, particularly as a marksman, earned him a reputation as a great fighter. His acts of courage not only secured his liberty but also established his legacy as a skilled and trusted warrior. After achieving freedom, Braddock’s life in Kentucky flourished. He purchased land near Valley Creek in 1818. This acquisition was a significant personal victory, symbolizing his transformation from a man forced to labor on these lands to their rightful owner.
Braddock’s narrative is a powerful reminder of the individual stories that teach the complex history of slavery and freedom. His legacy as a brave soldier and a free man continues to inspire and educate, symbolizing the enduring pursuit of justice and equality.
