First Black Baptist Church

The First Black Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, is a testament to the enduring spirit and faith of the African American community. The building that housed the Severns Valley Baptist Church congregation, built in 1833, initially served a predominantly white congregation. Despite segregation, the African American congregants’ commitment to their faith never wavered.

The African American practitioners desired their own safe space and place of worship. They were allowed to hold their services in a log cabin, overseen by the white church’s leadership. As the church progressed, the first Black man was ordained marking a significant milestone in the congregation’s history.

When Severns Valley Baptist Church relocated to accommodate a growing membership, the Black Baptist Church took the opportunity to acquire their building for $500. This purchase was more than a financial transaction; it symbolized a purposeful move towards autonomy and self-governance in religious practice. Despite a brief period when Union soldiers repurposed it as a temporary hospital, the original church building remained their home until 1974.

While no longer serving as a church, the 1833 white brick structure is a significant historical landmark and a reminder of the African Americans’ journey in Hardin County. From sitting on the balcony to owning the church building itself, their journey illustrates a compelling story of perseverance.
