About Margaret “Ma” Collier

Margaret “Ma” Collier is a pivotal figure in the history of the US military, particularly noted for her service at Fort Knox. As the first African American woman to serve as a hostess in military service clubs, she played a vital role in boosting the morale of segregated Black soldiers during and after World War II. Her 35-year tenure at the Kentucky installation began in 1942, where she was instrumental in providing comfort to the troops and ensuring leadership was aware of any issues among the Black personnel.

Collier’s unique approach involved bringing in prominent Black entertainers, such as Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Lena Horne, and Ray Charles, to perform at the post. These efforts entertained the soldiers and worked towards easing racial tensions within the pre-integration Army. Her commitment extended beyond entertainment; Collier established educational programs to bolster soldiers’ literacy and readiness for military life. Her dedication was recognized by news organizations upon her retirement in December 1976, highlighting her significant impact.

Born in Oswego, New York, to a father who was a combat veteran and a first sergeant, Collier grew up in a military environment. Her connection with “her boys” was profound. Although she never married or had children, the soldiers she served were her family. Margaret “Ma” Collier’s legacy of fostering racial equality and improving soldier welfare at Fort Knox is enduring. She is buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Fort Knox, resting near the soldiers she deeply cared for.
