About Eliza Brooks
Eliza Brooks was born into slavery in the 19th century, but her story of bravery and resilience continues to inspire people today. At the age of 50, Eliza decided to escape slavery with her two children and a friend. They crossed the Ohio River, a symbolic boundary between slave states and free states, relying on their wits, determination, and the cover of darkness to evade slave catchers.
Once they reached safety in Indiana, Eliza began a new life as a housekeeper. Her son James grew up and later owned a restaurant in Monrovia, Indiana, a testament to the family’s tenacity and drive to succeed. Through diligent research, Eliza’s great-great-granddaughter and her mother uncovered the family’s history. Eliza’s story is a touching reminder of the countless enslaved individuals who fought for and secured their freedom. Despite the challenges Eliza faced, her determination and bravery continue to inspire.
Her legacy lives on not just in her descendants but as a symbol of the unyielding human spirit that yearns for and ultimately achieves liberty. Eliza’s story is a testament to the strength and resilience of those who fought for their freedom, and it serves as a reminder of the power of the human spirit in the face of oppression. Her story is an important piece of American history, and her legacy reminds us of the ongoing fight for freedom and justice.
